Beautiful Game

Before kick-off, as we had taken our seats, another man making his way up the steps towards his seat paused briefly. He bent down then straightened up. He turned to his friend and said, “Find a penny, pick it up, and all the day, you’ll have good luck.” We turned to him and said, “Let’s hope so!” but expected little to come as a result.

We were delightfully and deliriously wrong.

Somehow, despite managing to fall behind in the first minute of the second half, we finished with a draw. I feel we were both lucky to get the draw in the end: both Scholes’ second goal and David Edgar’s goal were fortunate to find the back of the net, and either could have resulted in a save.

To be fair, Manchester United were a little under the weather: Rooney and Ronaldo were suffering from poor control, and few in the side were capable of faultless passing. Scholes was their best player on the day, but even he fell victim to poor distribution. We were the same – stray passes, lack of understanding and poor communication were the order of the day, and on balance a draw was fair.
