After doing the two ILM courses, I had thought about starting a business. The big problem is deciding what to do. I would like to open a bar with live bands. That is something that appeals to me. But it sounds very difficult, and it would be, as the saying goes, throwing myself in at the deep end.

Having said that, many people have gone straight into self-employment: some with what might be considered a lack of formal education. It proves that going to university alone doesn’t prepare you for self-employment. You can go on as many courses as you like, but although it will give you sound theoretical advice, it doesn’t prepare you in the same way experience does.

In any case, the Alliance and Leicester Commercial website is a useful starting point to familiarise yourself with what is expected from you in terms of business plans (and more) to secure some finance for your venture.
