Newcastle Managerless (2007 Edition)

Glenn Roeder has ‘resigned’ as Newcastle United manager. This came as a bit of a surprise. Although the team has performed poorly over recent matches, there wasn’t any sign of the manager being asked to leave. In fact, as I left the stadium yesterday, the majority of fans were calling for the board to resign (again).

The announcer urged us to remain in our seats after the final whistle to receive thanks from the players. Most fans treated it as a joke, and greeted the invitation with boos and jeering. Roeder was close to being the last name on the supporters lips as they left: there were insults aimed towards players and Shepherd in almost equal measure. The performance of Dyer was singled out – he was roundly booed after being substituted. And despite Bramble’s fairly solid performance, he was also booed as he went off – unfairly I thought.

Sam Allardyce has been singled out as a possible successor, but Jose Mourinho and Stuart Pearce have also been named. And with one match left of the season, against the bottom side of the league – and already relegated – Watford, I dread to wonder how this game will go.
